Today I ran a good hill session out near Sumner. My Achilles has been improving steadily over the past 4 weeks and I have built up to 90+ min runs successfully. It is great to be running again even if it does mean the amount of study that gets done is considerably less. After seeing the physio today for last time, and getting the all clear (although perhaps slightly too much foam rolling), I thought it was a good opportunity for a proper run. Having exams over the last 3 days meant I was a bit pushed for time in the evenings but now I am free (temporarily).
The Port Hills are fantastic for getting those hills into your running diet. There are tracks everywhere that criss-cross the ridges meaning every run can be different. Today I took some hill reps that included roughly 1000 m of climb. Each effort was about 500 m long with 100 m of vertical gain. I ran the first effort slightly slower to check my Achilles would handle it fine, but there was no mercy on the legs for the 9 reps that followed. Running over at Sumner made me realise there are still large parts of the Port Hills left to explore, and I am excited for this once I get back from JWOC.
My last exam is on Saturday after which I will fly home for a week in Wellington. Then I am off to Bulgaria to meet up with the Norwegians and train like kings. JWOC is shaping up to be pretty awesome and right now I am super amped.
